What can I do if I can’t currently quit a job, I am unhappy in?

I often get asked this question quite a lot and it’s something I know many of you struggle with. One of the reasons why this is this is a common one is firstly it's a mindset piece. There are a lot of reasons and fears why people feel they can’t leave a job.

We all need finances

Financially, we all need money. Money is important to help us pay for the things we need including food, bills, rent, mortgage etc. Sometimes we don't look at how we can save money for a short period of time, before we have found another job. Or we put so much pressure on ourselves, that we end up staying in a job, longer than we need to.

What is the mindset behind why you can't quit? If you are the only parent, or the only person who is bringing in a stable income that allows you to pay rent pay for your mortgage pay for your bills, then, obviously it’s going to be trickier for you to leave a job that you're currently not happy with.

Have a financial plan

What I will say is it’s very important that you address if you can't leave that job that you think about having a financial plan. What I mean by that is writing down a list of everything that you pay for this includes paying for your bills, paying for food month to month. If you have children, your children's clothing, equipment etc. Or you have to pay for any other things that you like gym membership, beauty treatments etc. List everything down on a piece of paper and take some time to do this. Then have a rough estimate of how much financially you need in order to survive month to month week to week, then look at how much of that money is going towards each expense. See how much you have left over, if any and think about where you could save money. For example, Gym membership or unnecessary expenses like extra clothes or eating out etc just temporally so you have some savings.  This way you have something you can live off so you can slow build an exit strategy.

Exit Strategy

This exit strategy could be that you need to look for another job that is going to pay you what you're worth. Make sure that you have an exit strategy I hear from a lot of women I talk to who feel they don't have any other choice. They may feel very overwhelmed and in a lot,  cases feel it’s not an option. This is where I want to say to you if that really is you, I firstly I just want to say, I understand the frustration with me saying have an exit strategy plan. I'm not saying to quit your job right now, quit your job in another four to six months, possibly, six months maximum. The longer you leave quitting your job, the harder it's going to be for you to leave. Most jobs require you to have a two to three month notice period so you also need to take this into account and think about ways you can start earning money if you plan effectively.  

Building your future

Bearing in mind if you have up to a maximum of five to six months to find a new job, you need to look for a new job at least every week. Spending at least three to four hours every week doing this will help increase your chances. If you have children, I know that may not be ideal because there's lots of things that you've got to do. This is where you may need to ask for support from other people. Maybe ask family or friends if you are alone or support from a partner if you get it or ex-partner etc. If the weekends are only time that you have. Perhaps spend an hour where you're applying for jobs, and you are on LinkedIn, and you're doing things that help you get to where you want to be.

This situation won’t last forever

When you're in a job, or when you're in a work environment you aren’t in this situation forever. No situation is ever permanent. Think about if you have to make some sacrifices right now how can this help you in the future?

In the same way, if you keep on thinking a situation is not going to change, this is where you need to take some affirmative action, and that doesn't just mean having an exit strategy. It means thinking about all the options on the table. So that could be some form of mentoring some form of counselling etc.

So not necessarily just asking for support with children if you have them. If you're a single parent asking for support for yourself because one of the main reasons why you haven't been able to leave your job is because there may be a lot of shame around leaving your job.

Scared of what other people will think?

Quitting your job is not as shameful is what you think. In fact, statistics now suggest a lot people do leave their jobs. Make sure you get your paid leave you get all of those things you need in order to enter into a new job. Money and finance is a necessity, I do understand that, but make sure you get extra support especially if you're being bullied at work, or you're dealing with a difficult company or maybe you have gone through something difficult within the workplace where you might need to ask for a lawyer’s support or someone else's support.

Ask for support

Ask for extra support, if you need it. And when I mean support I'm not just talking about your family and friends to help the children or help with extra things. One of the other reasons why people can't quit their job is because perhaps they're  financial situation may not be great or they have debts or in credit. Talk to somebody who's going to be able to help you be more financially savvy because if you're not quitting your job, just because of monetary reasons then you can turn this around.

Trust me, there's always a way around that and I think it's very important that people don't leave their job because money is holding them back.  I know for a lot of women I speak to are quite proud and have very good jobs and very good positions.  You need to be more financially savvy in general, and if you have debts build solutions to help pay them off. if I can be quite frank is you just need to think about where you get help? Do you need financial help? Do I need to career counselling, do I need just therapy etc

One of the reasons why you could feel conflicted in your current job is because maybe you're an abusive relationship so you're a single mom now, or maybe you've recently lost your partner to cancer Or maybe it could be that you've recently been diagnosed with an illness. because of that illness you know that if you take sick leave you're going to get, you know, a pay cut. There's always extra support that you can ask for but it needs to be support that is in alignment with you as an individual and your needs because there's no point staying in a job for the wrong reasons. Being in a career or job just for money it's very soul destroying.

Finding solutions to help you

There are ways that you can save money and there are ways that you can be clever around your finances, whilst also reinvesting that money, and this is where people need to educate themselves and also get support. So I really hope this blog post has helped, there is always light at the end of the tunnel. Don't think that you can't quit your job, you can leave a job and get another job within six months but you need to have a plan. Have a exit strategy. get emotional support from as many people as possible, and in some cases financial support for a lot of the people will be reading this blog post so I really hope this helps you make a decision based on hope that fear.

What is career mentoring?

Career mentoring is something that helps you be in a position you want be in. As a career mentor I will help you map out what you want, how you can get it and plan it in a way that suits your individual needs. If you haven’t experienced mentoring before it’s a form of guidance to help you move forward.

A mentor is a guide for their mentee and has experienced some of the challenges that they may already be facing themselves. They teach them strategies and techniques to help them overcome any issues they may be having.

I help the women I work with in a very bespoke way. There are elements of careers advice, guidance, coaching and mentoring all rolled into one.

It’s a safe collaborative relationship designed to help you move where you want to be in your career. Not where others think you should be or stick to a standard of something because it’s what is expected from you. For example, if you are working in an industry and have been taught to hold on to this status in society e.g. a lawyer or doctor. However, you want to start a business or change your career but worry what other people will say. I will work with you to overcome this and create a plan that is bespoke to you so you, so your career dream happens.

How it can it help you?

This depends on your current situation and where you are at. Most of the women who come to me are extremely bright and ambitious but feel scared, alone and often overwhelmed by life. They feel like only one route is the option for them. So, by taking up career mentoring you are opening your world to an array of possibilities. These possibilities can help you explore what your really want and who you want to be.

Some of the ways I can help is by mapping out training for a new career or profession. We can also look at any business ideas you may have and see what flexible working means to you. Or if you are seeking more in your career and have been playing it safe helping you work for organisations that you may have overlooked. Allowing you to explore what your values and beliefs are doing work you care about and can fall in love with.

My background in careers and psychology

In terms of how I can help you I have a background in Psychology and a Post graduate in careers guidance. I always knew I wanted to help people because my mum was a teacher and my dad was a family lawyer. It’s a value that has been instilled in me since I was young child. I have always been curious about people and their behaviour and find with all the different clients who have come to me even when I worked in schools. I never get bored of hearing their unique stories and career aspirations.

When you work with me I do give you careers advice where necessary, but I also help you look deeper then that. I have had my own struggles in my life and when I worked for Mind at 23 it completely changed how I wanted to work with people.

Due to my passion around mental health and my own personal struggles with depression, anxiety, workplace bullying and going though redundancy. I know working life can sometimes feel like a roller coaster. I am here to help you iron out those kinks and provide you with the solid support you need.

When I work with clients I incorporate psychology and mindset practices that have helped me too. I also spend time on my own self development and have worked with some successful business mentors.

3 Tips on how to feel more career confident

There isn’t a magic cure for being Career confident but if you are currently looking for a new job and feel like you aren’t good enough for a new position. Or are doubting what you are good at. This post will give you some encouragement to help you realise it’s actually not as bad as you think it is.

You can now go find that new career, new job and place where you can feel confident and sassy about who really are. If you channel into what makes you feel confident. 

Here I share three tips on how you can feel confident in your career.

1.  Do what you love – “Love is the answer”.  As corny as that sounds you need to love what you do. When you see an artist, writer, musician, actor etc. They all display one magic ingredient love. Or put another way passion for their craft. If you really want to feel confident about what you do give it some love. Imagine your favourite toy as a child how much did you love spending time with it? In the same way when you love what you do your confidence and abilities will naturally shine through. So, if you currently don’t enjoy what you do ask yourself why your confidence is being affected? In some cases, we can do tasks which are easy. For example, admin, filing etc. How do you feel doing it? Would you rather be meeting clients or creating things that show your own unique talent? If it helps write down a list of all the things you love to do. Then think about roles or careers where you can naturally do more of what you love.

2. Speak from experience – Talk about the experience you already have and don’t forgot what you have already achieved. It can sometimes be hard to be enthused about your career it if it’s not what you want to do anymore. Your confidence could be hiding in the shadows thinking about what you are doing now and forgetting all the wonderful things you have done before. Take some time to either look at your LinkedIn profile or CV and write down 2 things from each job you are proud of and would be confident sharing with others. Your experience speaks volumes about you this can also include any educational or professional qualifications you may have that help you feel more career confident.

3. Believe in you – If you want to feel more career confident believing in yourself is essential. Without self-belief in your skills, abilities and accomplishments you won’t be able to own that confidence. This may be a hard one for some of you but that is why that list of things you are proud of is so important. It cements you do have things to shout about. If you are struggling to believe in you why not ask your colleagues or people you have previously worked with what they think your strengths are? When others believe in your abilities this can help you believe in yourself too. Having validation that you are have worthy skills can help you potentially apply for a promotion or maybe think about going for that career change you have wanted to do for while now.

Lastly, I want to finish off by saying if your career confidence is directly to do with your job, workplace bullying, harassment or something more serious. Your confidence could be one area that is being affected. Its important you look at getting support if your situation doesn’t improve. I hope this post has helped you realise that you already have a lot to offer and if others make you think otherwise its now about acting to find somewhere you will be appreciated for your skills and abilities.

4 Great Interview Tips

This blog post is formulated to help you feel motivated for an upcoming interview. It may seem like the longest 30-45 minutes of your life but if you follow these tips you should have a better chance of having the kind of interview you want to be remembered for.

1.  Research – This is an essential part of the interview process and if you want to impress the employer is something you must think about. Research includes looking at what, the job role would involve. As well as looking into the company itself. Where are they based? How many offices do they have etc? What else do they do? etc. They may not ask you directly about the company but it’s important you show enthusiasm for the role and the organisation. This will also help you prepare any questions you may have for the interviewers towards the end of the interview.

2.  Prepare – If you get nervous about interviews preparing for your interview with small details like your outfit the night before, to the route you need to take. May help you feel more at ease. However, preparation also includes writing down potential questions you think you may be asked on the day and preparing your answers. It’s also about helping you prepare to be at best.  Research and your mindset are all ways of preparing as well as why you want a new job. There are no wrong or right ways in preparing but if it helps you feel more at ease this is the most important aspect of preparation. 

3.  Know your why – Your why is an important part of why you are job hunting and going for an interview in the first place. If you are not sure why you are going for a role its important you have clarity on this before you even, consider going to an interview. The clearer you are about this the better. For example, if you want more responsibility and the potential to learn more etc. This can be part of your why but also maybe you want more progression in a new job role which you aren’t getting right now. It’s likely if you are currently working they may ask “Why are you considering looking at other roles? This question will help them understand not only why but why they should hire you. 

4. Be yourself – If you want to be successful in an interview being yourself is the best thing you can possibly do. When I mean be yourself I mean don’t pretend to something you are not. I have heard various stories about candidates coming across amazingly in an interview and being someone else when they start working there. It’s important you are honest with your future employer and you also show you have integrity. So, bring your personality to do it even if you are a bit nervous don’t let this stop you showing the achievements you have.

What type of CV format is right for you?

When you are thinking about creating your CV its important your CV has a specific format. This helps not only with the readability of the CV but is also important for showing if you are emphasizing on your performance, skills or targeting a specific industry or field. It also allows the employer to see what you have to bring to the table in a clear and concise way

So I get asked alot which CV format is right for me Soma? It can sometimes be a based on preference and dependent on your industry. It's also about what you feel will reflect your personality. Remember an employer or recruiter may not of spoken to yet so you're being judged solely on 1-2 sheets of paper. Making an impact is crucial. 

When I work with clients I mainly work with coaching them to create a Functional or Performance based CV. When I worked with young people I used to help them create a student/graduate CV. Other types CV that do exist include targeted or specialised CVs etc. 

What are the key factors to help you decide if you want a functional or performance based CV? Let's explore how each one is different first. 

Functional CV- Is more around an individual’s key skills. More performance-based management skills and project management skills etc can be highlighted here. This type of CV focuses on specialised fields that may require certain skills to do a job. It could be more suited to professions like engineering, IT, HR, and Science based jobs etc. It can sometimes be controversial and it may not be as detailed in terms of achievements. So it's important to pick key skills you know the employer is really looking for and reflect this in a powerful way. Key skills that are needed to do a role and be in the job description of the typical role you are applying to for example stakeholder management. The first two sections need to be written well and be very specific to the role or sector you belong to.

Performance- Is a CV which shows elements where you have performed well in your job and career. Your Key achievements highlight your performance and relevance to the  work experience you have. Examples of where a Performance based CV would work is Teacher, Counsellor, or Sales and Retail etc. This type of CV could be important for jobs were targets and performance is important. Media and marketing roles where experience is vast may benefit from a CV like this. This CV can also help if you are looking for a promotion in the sector you are in especially in education or sales and customer care. It's more about what you have achieved or done in your role. This helps showcase a broad experience especially if you have also had a few different careers etc. For example, finance and teaching. Think about if performance is a key element of the role and industry you are aiming for.

So what can help you choose? 

1. Set out to impress - Impress potential employers and recruiters instead of just putting your experience down on 4-5 sheets of paper. Remember a format allows you to have the freedom to keep to two pages and for it to give them some information but just enough to hook them in.If its written well and demonstrates what they need, your chances of being called for an interview will be more probable.  

2.Make an impression - Choosing a format can also help you make a good impression before they even meet you. If your personal profile, format and overall layout is clear a potential employer and recruiter will be curious to know more. It’s almost important to come across as leaving them with wanting more. For example, if you have worked in a big company that is credible mention it. Think about what makes you stand out. This could be especially important for people who are in more creative fields where the competition to get an interview is greater. 

3. Layout matters - Having a format also makes it much easier to read and keep it concise. Your personal statement should be at the top and key skills if its a functional CV should be below that. Your achievements should be the main highlight if it’s a performance-based CV. Most employers do a 60 second scan so its key that it catches an employers or recruiters eye.

4.What will showcase your talent? - Think about what will showcase your talents and skills and in effect help you land a potential job interview. Think about your goal whilst job hunting. Most people are looking for a new job or want a job. Bear this in mind and don’t be afraid to try and dazzle your employers with things you are proud to talk about even before they meet you. It will grab their attention and make you shine. The clearer you are the better.

Your commitment will show if you make effort with your CV and create a format that fits you and also exhibits your personality and values. Your personal profile and hobbies and interest section can do this.

How to find career happiness - Strategies of dealing with unhappiness at work

This video and blog post is aimed at those of you who can't always leave their job straight away and gives you some strategies to deal with unhappiness before you find another job or go to pastures new.When you realise you are unhappy at work you can't always leave your job straight away. So this video and blog post gives you some strategies to deal with the unhappiness before you find another job or are able to plan for an alternative option. 

The three tips I share in the video are as as follows. 

1. Balance yourself everyday - I speak about meditation in this video this is a key practice to restoring balance in your life. You can practice meditation or mindfulness to help relieve stress and get rid of worrying thoughts. It also helps you keep calm and grounded. I would also add here by doing positive affirmations  every morning after you meditate your mind will also be focused on having a good day. An example of a positive affirmation to help you cope with your working day could be "I am going to have a good day today no matter what". This will help you stay in this positive frame of mind no matter how stressed or overwhelmed you may feel. It will also allow you to cope with the happiness in a calm way where you are not becoming anxious about feeling overwhelmed etc. To find some examples of affirmations you can visit youtube. 

2. Expressing your emotions - When you are unhappy at work you are likely to be suffering from a myriad of emotions and that's ok. Expressing these emotions can sometimes be really hard especially if you know you are putting on a bit of an act at work and pretending everything is ok when its not. This is where expressing your emotions is very important. Take some time to write in a journal either first thing in the morning or last thing at night. Write down free hand how you are feeling about everything for at least 10-15 minutes. Then read it back if you have had an especially horrible week or day at work this will help you reflect on your feelings and allow you to see how you feeling without bottling things up. You may have a friend or partner you can share your concerns with and talking to someone can also really help too. Be open and honest about your situation and remember if you are unhappy at work that's ok. Just be kind to yourself here and remember your situation isn't permanent its something you can get out. 

3. Exercise - If you are not releasing your emotions other feelings can also pop up. That is why exercise is an amazing way to release anger, stress and anxiety. If your unhappiness is causing you to feel depressed exercise can really help elevate your mood. When we exercise we release endorphins, Which is hormone that makes us feel good. It also helps us feel less stressed, energised and overall improves our mood. So exercising regularly whilst unhappy a work will help you cope day to day. If you feel frustrated at work and about your current situation this will help you feel more relaxed and release this frustration whilst helping you feel better. Notice periods can take time and this could help you cope with a long notice period at work or pending redundancy. 

4. Doing something fun - Your work life balance is important so it's important to do something fun just for you. This could be anything that you enjoy doing like going on a mini break, having a massage or doing something which is a hobby for you and spending the whole day doing it. For example if you like cooking maybe going to a cooking class for the day or doing something different like a dance class. This will help you to relax and not think about any work issues you may be having. Also its important to do things like this so that you remember the things you do life and you restore any unhappiness you may be feeling at work. 

I really hope that these tips help you whether you are thinking about getting a new job. Or have recently quit and are looking for a new job. It's important to remember however stressed you may feel now this time will pass and you will definitely get through it.

I have helped many women with their CVs and I get lots of questions on what is essential and what isn't essential etc. So I thought would put this video and post together for anyone who is currently job hunting. Or anyone who has been in the same job for a long time and now fancies changing. Please note these are suggestions that have worked for myself and the women I have helped. If you belong to a specialist sector you may have to include technical elements to your CV. Please make sure if you are unsure about this you speak to a current or past colleague who can support you with this.

Here are the tips I discuss in the video.

1. Personal Profile - Tells your potential employer the type of job you are looking for. It should be a concise outline of your experience and who you are as person. You may want to include what you value as an individual and how you wish to progress throughout your career. Be enthusiastic and show your passion for growth. 

2. Key Achievements - Is a really great section to that can help add value to your CV. You can talk about the fact that maybe you completed a marathon or you won an award at work. This is a great way to help share some of the great things you have achieved both on a personal and professional level. So that an potential employer can see what you truly have to offer.

3. Professional bodies - Make sure you mention if you belong to a professional board of membership.As this will show your professional development and on-gong interest within your field of work. 

4. Personal interests or hobbies and interest - Your CV is your opportunity to help you stand out from other potential employees. Don't forgot to show your true character and personality. This section will show you have interests outside work as well as being someone who enjoys what they do. Remember this is something that you can use as extra section its not something that is compulsory though.

Tips about using Linkedin

 

Hi all I wanted to do this video for you all because many clients ask me is it essential to have a LinkedIn profile and how can they best use it. If you want to be head hunted and market yourself through an on-line method LinkedIn could be an ideal tool but its about knowing how to use it that really matters.

Here are the tips I mention in the video.

1. Having a great profile picture - Make sure you have a clear head-shot so your face can be seen clearly. It helps if its been taken professionally with a white background but if this is not possible that's OK. Use your judgement, don't put up a profile picture which looks unprofessional or unflattering such as selfie etc.

2. Your Summary - Should tell potential employers about who you are as person. Some of your personal interests. Add a little bit of personality to it. It could be you are an experienced IT consultant etc. but instead of writing that why not put something like. "A highly skilled computer consultant who is good at ...... Make it exciting to read and add some of your own personality to it so that people will want to connect with you. Show you passion here. You want people to be interested in what have to offer.

3. Connections - This section acts as the professional network of people who you are connected to. This could be people we you have worked with in past or your current colleagues etc. Or even any professionals you have met at events or training. Some people you don't know may ask to connect with you . If this happens make sure you always send them a message to find out what draw them to your profile and why they wanted to connect. As this can help build your professional network and if you are job hunting you never know this person could in fact even be able to help you. If in doubt of anyone who wants to add you and it seems suspicious or not related to what you are interested in just don't add them.

4. LinkedIn Premium - Is an optional extra which you pay a charge for. This includes the feature of sending extra messages to any connections who are not in your current network. This may especially be important if you are looking for a new role. You don't have to have a Premium account to enjoy its full benefits though. As I mentioned in the video you do have an advantage of seeing who everyone is that actually views your profile in a advanced way but this may not be very important to you. So LinkedIn Premium is probably better for people who use LinkedIn every day if this isn't you it may not be worth the investment.

5. LinkedIn groups - Are a great way of connecting with people in groups. Seeing what job opportunities are on offer and also seeing what professionals in your line of work are talking about. If you use these groups probably you never know the right opportunity or employer could be in a group that you are interested in.

6. Act Professionally - LinkedIn is not a social networking site. So keep messages and content on your profile completely professional and in line with the type of roles you are looking for. If you feel people are trying to connect with you for the wrong reasons you have the right to not add them or even block them.

7. Help support others - Use LinkedIn as a tool to help and support your other colleagues. If the line of work you are in is going through many changes why not share articles via the LinkedIn post feature to show this. Or if you know someone is looking for a vacancy or you know of a vacancy somewhere why not share this on LinkedIn etc.

Using your intuition to make decisions

Hi everyone this is a video I have done about intuition I wanted to share this with you all. Because I want you to think about if you use your intuition to make important life decisions. I always talk about intuition and think its something we can't ignore but have decided to listen to that inner voice more. Whatever decisions you are making right now whether this be changing your job, moving to another country or buying a new house. Do you use intuition to help you? You may ask yourself what is intuition?  Intuition can be described as being "the ability to understand something instinctively, without the need for conscious reasoning." In order words your gut or inner voice telling you that something feels right or not. So do you use it enough and in your everyday life?

As I mention in the video Steve jobs used intuition to make many of his business decisions. What is your calling?

When you wake up in the morning what is your true purpose or calling? For many it can be their family. Some people feel its their responsibility to look after their family and thus in turn the job they have can relate to this.

So what is a calling really? We are obviously not talking about phoning a friend here lol. It all depends on your own unique interpretation but a calling can also be described as "An inner urge or a strong impulse,especially one believed to be divinely inspired." or it can be a "An occupation,profession or career. " This definition is according to the online dictionary. 

So what do feel is your calling? I know in my heart I always wanted to help people. I didn't always know how, I would do it but helping people was something very important to me. What's important to you? Is it the kind of job you want are looking for an executive position or do you want a job you truly fall in love with. Your values in life can help define what you calling is in life.

If we think about a calling being a spiritual path. How were lead to that point? Was it something that happened to you. Or did you just have a moment where you realised the calling you once so truly treasured doesn't exist anymore. We all change as people and sometimes the calling we had when we were younger isn't always the thing we actually pursue later in life.

Many of the women I speak to tell me they always had a passion for art or something creative yet they work in a city job. There isn't anything wrong with this but I do hear regret in their voice. Then when I ask them why did you study and peruse more studies. I mostly always get  the same answer. "Because my family wanted me to ". I like these women have also followed this path. I love what I do I truly do but sometimes the calling and desire we really want is put on hold by the family we love so much. We want to make them proud of us and part of that is compromising what we actually would like to do.

So what is your calling? Is it a desire to start a new business. Change your current career. Or get a job where you are actually happy.

Whatever it is make sure you plan it well.Don't let fear and other people's negative energy from creating what you really in your life. Start creating it sooner rather then later. You will see once you follow your true calling you will be more authentic and this will represent the real you. Yes there will be challenges but if you are feeling to face such challenges then your calling is worth fighting for.

What's the fire in your belly?

What is the fire in your belly? When it comes to to what you do? Do you feel passion for it and are you excited about the possibilities that could come your way. If not maybe that fire in your belly has gone or maybe you didn't have it in the first place. What can you do to ignite it with your real purpose in life? So you may someone who is in a job right now and feels unsatisfied right now if this is you think about why you feel this way. Did you enjoy what you did in the beginning and your excitement for it burned out. Lets think about this logically what changed was it the job or you? Its OK to admit to these things don't deny how you feel. It could be a case that you know the role you are currently in was never what you wanted to do in the first place. However you have ended up staying there because without realizing it you have given up on that fire in belly and the dreams you had ages ago. You have listened to other people about having a stable job, mortgage and 2.point five children but what is that you really desire? Do you even want any of these things or has society and your family been telling you this is what you must do.

So what do I mean about this fire in your belly then?  Simply really think about a time you got something new whether it be a new car, phone or pet. How did you feel about it? Excited, happy, passionate think deeply about all the emotions you felt and why you felt this way. When we open up to all the possibilities we have this can shine a light on what we actually want. The point I am trying to make is do you feel excited about your job and want to go to work everyday? Wouldn't this be a great feeling? You could still really love the work you are involved with but for some reason the environment or the colleagues you work with are causing you to fan the flames of the fire in your belly. You feel fed up, frustrated and see no way out.

So put simply what excites you at work? Whatever role you are in right now what do you enjoy? Is it the creativity, helping someone or just simply solving a problem in a job and finding a solution to this. We all enjoy different things and get job satisfaction from different things but remember if you don't have a fire in your belly that's OK too. What I mean by this is not everyone is driven by passion some people work as a means to end. However isn't it better and more inspirational to think about the fact that this fire is keeping you going everyday. Knowing you do the thing you love.

Wouldn't the feeling of having job that didn't feel like a job be a great feeling? Enjoyment can come in many forms but if you aren't  fulfilled the fire in belly isn't set alight. You can work hard to achieve something but if your  heart isn't quite there this will show in one form or another. The phrase working hard and working smart comes to mind. We can all work the hardest we can but is it really want we want to do.

So if you know your passions aren't currently in what you do, think about how you can change this. It could be as simply as talking to someone who you know you can confide in. Don't let your fear of being true to yourself hold you back from what you really want.I also want you to ask yourself what is your purpose in life? If you know working in a career where you are bored and unmotivated isn't the answer take the necessary steps to come out of this. This won't happen overnight Rome wasn't built in day so your change will take time don't rush it.

Do you feel like you are treated like a resource not a human being?

This was a statement given by someone when I was doing my research on why they were unhappy in their work "I feel like I am treated as a resource and not a human being" Is this how you feel when you at you work be honest even if its not something you really want to admit. I remember I felt a bit like this especially when external colleagues only phoned me to get information. I felt like a information resource and not a colleague.

So I wonder where does this stem from is it office mentality? Your boss? Or is just the fact that you unsatisfied and that work makes us feel this way. Sometimes its the actual people who we work with that make us feel this way and not the job itself. I remember working as a temp somewhere. One day my entire schedule had been changed without me be notified after two weeks of doing the same schedule. It took me nearly two hours to travel there,  I was then told that a new permanent staff member was given preference over me. I was annoyed but more then that I felt like I was treated as an extra part they could access when they needed me not because they actually wanted me there.

Feeling undervalued at work makes us feel all sorts of emotions. Appreciation we all need a little bit or a lot depending on how important this is to us as individuals. A very wise friend of mine once said "Don't expect anything from anyone". I think our expectations are in line with the appreciation we seek from others around us. Do you feel appreciated in you life and work? If the answer is no you may need to ask yourself why?

Many of the clients I speak to feel unappreciated at work. They feel like their managers don't really respect them and colleagues belittle them. Does this sound familiar? Unfortunately this is something I also felt when I  worked in schools. Some of the teachers I worked alongside didn't understand what I did as a careers adviser in the school. I hate to admit this but it did feel like they almost looked down on me. Especially if the word "connexions" was mentioned. At first I thought maybe this just happens to me but when I spoke to other colleagues many of them were actually in the same boat. I realised a lot of this was do with the individual school and how they appreciated careers advice. In one of the schools I in worked I had the headmaster give me referrals, he wanted me involved in the school and put his pupils first.

So what does appreciation feel like to you? Is it feeling valued and as though you are wanted and people are asking for your help. Are you recognised for the good work you do and given extra responsibility. Feeling like a resource goes hand in hand with feeling unappreciated. Give yourself the love you want. If you know deep in your gut your job and career undervalues you, and makes you feel like a resource ask yourself what you can do change this.Only you have the power to change but until you take the action to this it won't happen.
