Why Career Clarity is so important?

Times have changed

The idea of having one career for life and sticking to this has changed dramatically in the last 40 years or so. I have seen this in my parents’ generations and in the generations before them. My grand-dads and grand uncles stuck to one profession for life and then retired. With my parents my mum changed her career from an accountant to teacher. My dad shifted his direction of how he practiced law from being a criminal barrister to family solicitor.

Career change isn’t seen as an unusual concept anymore nor is seeking your true purpose. When the “Black Monday” crash happened in the 80s. A lot of people who had families to support needed to re-train and begin again.

The concept of having one job for life has been spun on its head. Especially as this continued to happen through to the 90s and now. Again, with another crash happening in 2000 onwards. Where more people were being made redundant or feel confused about their options because there are more options available.

Career transition is different compared to 50 years ago. Also, the type of work that people used to do is different a lot of manual jobs factories have seized due to the advancement in technology. Technology has allowed more people to work from home. Go freelance, start a small micro business or build a small start-up employing others.

Career theorists that help explain why a lack of career clarity could happen

If we apply a principal of change to a career theorists like Super and Adams, Hayes and Hopson life was different and expectations from society where different for those born in before the 1920’s to those born in the 1940’s to now

Super says we go through 5 stages in our life that is directly linked to our career. It is between stage 3 -4 we are beginning to seek more clarity and meaning in our lives.

Stage 3 is known as the Establishment phase when we are aged between 25-44. We may have entered different roles but are trying to understand what suits us. You may feel like you want more, like a promotion, starting a business or having more flexibility especially if you are working mum. Hence wanting to the establish yourself career wise here. You could be confused because life is throwing you a few curve balls and although you want a steadier career perhaps the one you currently have isn’t suiting your individual needs and values.

This is also were Adams Hayes and Hopson can be related to this. They express that direct life events impact on our career and this can be linked to a lack career clarity. Which can be caused by overwhelm and confusion with your working life. This is a six-state transition process. If you have recently been made redundant you may may start to experience self-doubt which is stage 3 of this process. Wondering what I will do now etc. Or become anxious or depressed if you are worrying about the future longevity of your career.

These theories show you some of the reasons why a lack of career clarity can be directly linked to life events. It’s not something we can necessarily control which is ok and it’s about understanding this and thinking how we can move forward.

We all need to have a purpose and why.

It’s important to have a purpose and a why because without one how can we go to work and do something we truly love. Therefore, career clarity is important because it’s pointless going for a goal or achievement if it’s not actually what you want.

For example, if you know going for a promotion isn’t want you want because you don’t enjoy your field of work anymore why are you doing it?

It’s important to understand your key values, your beliefs and the purpose you want to embody in your work. The hardest part here can be about feeling like you are being unrealistic or silly if you want to do something.

I am not saying you need to go for a lifelong dream of being singer or actor if you can’t do either lol. Be realistic of course. However, don’t limit what you can do.

For example, if you are a mum reading this and your dream is to set up a clothes boutique business and you have a creative flair for designing and making clothes. Perhaps you ended up doing this when you had a child because you wanted to create something bespoke for them. Then realised others noticed your designs and someone said you could turn this in to a business etc. However you thought being a business owner isn’t something that could be viable and thus went back to a full-time job. In fact your currently job as a medical secretary is stressful and not making you happy, What steps can you make to start taking small actions to create what you actually want? Especially if you feel money is something that is holding you back?

If you are completely unclear about what you want. This may because there are some negative forces in your life which are preventing you from seeing things clearly. Or you may feel it’s too late for you get clear because of your age, gender, etc.

It’s never too late remember your why is unique to you. Your why is an important part of understanding career clarity because without it you can’t move forward. It may take some time to formulate it.

This could also be because you feel overwhelmed in your life in general and feel change is something you can’t face or are just not sure where to start.

Career Mentoring and how it can help you?

What is career mentoring?

Career mentoring is something that helps you be in a position you want be in. As a career mentor I will help you map out what you want, how you can get it and plan it in a way that suits your individual needs. If you haven’t experienced mentoring before it’s a form of guidance to help you move forward.

A mentor is a guide for their mentee and has experienced some of the challenges that they may already be facing themselves. They teach them strategies and techniques to help them overcome any issues they may be having.

I help the women I work with in a very bespoke way. There are elements of careers advice, guidance, coaching and mentoring all rolled into one.

It’s a safe collaborative relationship designed to help you move where you want to be in your career. Not where others think you should be or stick to a standard of something because it’s what is expected from you. For example, if you are working in an industry and have been taught to hold on to this status in society e.g. a lawyer or doctor. However, you want to start a business or change your career but worry what other people will say. I will work with you to overcome this and create a plan that is bespoke to you so you, so your career dream happens.

This depends on your current situation and where you are at. Most of the women who come to me are extremely bright and ambitious but feel scared, alone and often overwhelmed by life. They feel like only one route is the option for them. So, by taking up career mentoring you are opening your world to an array of possibilities. Some of the ways I can help is by mapping out training for a new career or profession. We can also look at any business ideas you may have and see what flexible working means to you. My background in careers and psychology

In terms of how I can help you I have a background in Psychology and a Post graduate in careers guidance. I always knew I wanted to help people because my mum was a teacher and my dad was a family lawyer. It’s a value that has been instilled in me since I was young child. I have always been curious about people and their behaviour and find with all the different clients who have come to me even when I worked in schools. I never get bored of hearing their unique stories and career aspirations.

When you work with me I do give you careers advice where necessary, but I also help you look deeper then that. I have had my own struggles in my life and when I worked for Mind at 23 it completely changed how I wanted to work with people.

Due to my passion around mental health and my own personal struggles with depression, anxiety, workplace bullying and going though redundancy. I know working life can sometimes feel like a roller coaster. I am here to help you iron out those kinks and provide you with the solid support you need.

When I work with clients I incorporate psychology and mindset practices that have helped me too. I also spend time on my own self development and have worked with some successful business mentors.

Do you need a Career Holiday?

We all need to go on holiday once in while why not have the same attitude with our work hey. Would you like to work abroad do something totally different? What’s stopping you? Before you think about taking that career holiday ask yourself do you really need to take one?

A Career holiday could be taking a break from your current career by travelling or just trying a new job for a while and seeing what other options could be available to you.

1.       Are you happy in your job?

2.       Do you like what you do?

3.       Don’t feel like you need a new change

4.       Love where you work and don’t want to change anything.

If you answer yes to any of these questions, then you most likely don’t need a career holiday.

However, if you are:

-          Bored with your work

-          Feel like you want more

-          Want to travel the world but don’t how.

-          Don’t want to be in the same job for the rest of your life.

Then its properly time you did take that career holiday so that you revive your energy and put new zest into your career and working life.

Does this sound like you what could you do next? Write down what your idea of a career holiday is. There are no wrong or right answers here. It may not even involve any actual work but this will give you an idea of what you want in a break. This will help relax you and make you feel happier when you come back!!

Then think about how you could make this happen!! It may seem like a crazy idea to go on career holiday but remember life is very short. If you are an ambitious, hardworking person this could be a great way to let out all the things you want to do that your current job doesn’t allow.

Either way a career holiday could be the thing that helps you get what you have always been looking for. This may include your dream job, new lease of life and general lessons that you may want to implement into your life.

 

 

 

 

How can I find a job and career that pays me what I truly want?

Money is something that affects all the women I talk to. They often ask me how can they find a job and career that not only fits their values but what they want in life too. So, I want to share some tips to help with this.

1. Why do you need the money you want?  

Be realistic and think about the main objectives behind what you need the money for? If you want to have more money what will it bring you and what is the goal behind attaining it? Don’t just go after the money and feel deflated once you get especially If it doesn’t fulfil you. Sometimes if you have more money you can overspend it so it’s important to make smart decisions. There is a saying the more you have of something the more we use it and the same goes for money itself.

2. What is the cost of living for you and does the money you earn impact on your lifestyle?

If you live in London or another expensive city important factors to consider are rent, living costs and day to day expenses this can factor into the money you want to earn. So be practical and realistic about this. Millionaires and six figure earners say money gives them freedom and flexibility. Remember though when you earn more money you may also pay higher tax rates. There is nothing wrong with wanting more money. Start thinking about, what do you need to, do so you can earn more? For example, do you want more then £4K per month. Do you need more money for your children or expecting a child? Perhaps you want to invest it in an ISA or bond? Lastly you may need to pay off debts, spend it on home renovations or a family holiday. Why is it important for your lifestyle and circumstances? Make a list of all the reasons you want to earn more money and put a why next to each reason. Then assess how important this list is to you. In some cases, you may need money to pay off an important debt. The most important debt that a lot of homeowners have is of course a mortgage.

3 .What do think about money get your emotions around money sorted first.

What does money mean to you and why is important to you emotionally. A fear of losing money can be a strong emotion for many especially if in their past this has happened to them.

Whenever money and emotions are mentioned to my clients they don’t always like talking about this. This is not to say that money is a bad thing but many of us are brought up to believe wanting more is bad. Your emotions around it may bring up things from your past. For example, did your family make you feel guilty about spending too much money when you brought something expensive for yourself and didn’t buy anyone anything else? Or did you live in a house where your parents were always struggling to keep up with payments and as a result you feel you aren’t good with money and it’s a tough subject for you talk about.

You may think it’s silly to think about money and emotions, but a lot of our money-making decisions can be linked to emotions. For example, when we go shopping how often do we feel driven by our favourite food items and stick to that without sometimes looking at the cost. In the UK we spend a lot on monthly food shops and it can be said we end up spending more when we see things on special offers or we spend less if we are budgeting.

A lot of financial psychologists say money and emotions are directly linked to our childhood and a passed down belief of “Do you really need that” may have been indirectly passed down to you. Thus, making you feel guilty when you have spent a lot of money even if you can afford it.

4. If you are being undervalued or underpaid do something about this.

Are you being undervalued and underpaid, if so. Why do you deserve more? If you aren’t getting paid what you want right now what are the legitimate reasons for wanting more.If you know you want more and are worth it discuss this and negotiate a salary with your boss or line manager.

It may help you to journal about all the ways in which you feel you have added value in the time you have been in your current job. If you have only been there a short while this may be harder to prove unless you increased sales or did something to redefine how others thought of you. If you are not able to get the salary you want really assess why do you need it.

For example, if you are buying a new house or need it to pay off something very important like outstanding credit card bills after you got married. Think about what it will cost you financially to live on a budget for a short while and in that time look at jobs you want and apply for them. It’s important you think of a figure you want to earn, so you can pay for all the things you want and need.  

If you have been preventing yourself from getting paid what you know you truly want and desire think about the tips discussed above. Think about why you need more money, what kind of lifestyle you want, what are the feelings around money and lastly are you acting to make sure you get paid what you want. Lastly your idea of what you want will be different to your friends and family. If you are reading this and know your emotions are coming from others around you sort out what you want first. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

3 Tips on how to feel more career confident

There isn’t a magic cure for being Career confident but if you are currently looking for a new job and feel like you aren’t good enough for a new position. Or are doubting what you are good at. This post will give you some encouragement to help you realise it’s actually not as bad as you think it is.

You can now go find that new career, new job and place where you can feel confident and sassy about who really are. If you channel into what makes you feel confident. 

Here I share three tips on how you can feel confident in your career.

1.  Do what you love – “Love is the answer”.  As corny as that sounds you need to love what you do. When you see an artist, writer, musician, actor etc. They all display one magic ingredient love. Or put another way passion for their craft. If you really want to feel confident about what you do give it some love. Imagine your favourite toy as a child how much did you love spending time with it? In the same way when you love what you do your confidence and abilities will naturally shine through. So, if you currently don’t enjoy what you do ask yourself why your confidence is being affected? In some cases, we can do tasks which are easy. For example, admin, filing etc. How do you feel doing it? Would you rather be meeting clients or creating things that show your own unique talent? If it helps write down a list of all the things you love to do. Then think about roles or careers where you can naturally do more of what you love.

2. Speak from experience – Talk about the experience you already have and don’t forgot what you have already achieved. It can sometimes be hard to be enthused about your career it if it’s not what you want to do anymore. Your confidence could be hiding in the shadows thinking about what you are doing now and forgetting all the wonderful things you have done before. Take some time to either look at your LinkedIn profile or CV and write down 2 things from each job you are proud of and would be confident sharing with others. Your experience speaks volumes about you this can also include any educational or professional qualifications you may have that help you feel more career confident.

3. Believe in you – If you want to feel more career confident believing in yourself is essential. Without self-belief in your skills, abilities and accomplishments you won’t be able to own that confidence. This may be a hard one for some of you but that is why that list of things you are proud of is so important. It cements you do have things to shout about. If you are struggling to believe in you why not ask your colleagues or people you have previously worked with what they think your strengths are? When others believe in your abilities this can help you believe in yourself too. Having validation that you are have worthy skills can help you potentially apply for a promotion or maybe think about going for that career change you have wanted to do for while now.

Lastly, I want to finish off by saying if your career confidence is directly to do with your job, workplace bullying, harassment or something more serious. Your confidence could be one area that is being affected. Its important you look at getting support if your situation doesn’t improve. I hope this post has helped you realise that you already have a lot to offer and if others make you think otherwise its now about acting to find somewhere you will be appreciated for your skills and abilities.

What is your unique selling point?

I wrote a blog post about this on my original careers blog I started back in 2010. About your USP and how to use this to market your skills to stand out to employers. That blog post was looking at helping graduates who were struggling to find out a job and thus using their unique selling point.

In this post, I want to share how you can use your unique selling point to get a job you really want. I will be sharing some key things to consider. Firstly, let’s look at what a unique selling point is. A USP is a marketing term used to sell products in business to see what makes them unique or different to what is already out there. One thing I see with a lot the women I work with is their ability to undermine their true talents and potential. I wanted to do this post because I believe everyone has something unique to bring to the table especially when job hunting or looking for a new job. So, I am sharing some tips on how you can tap into this.

1.       Write a list of the all the things that make you unique – Some of you may struggle with this one a little bit but think about what makes you different to other job candidates. Are you an avid fitness fanatic? Do you, do charity work at the weekends? Or maybe you sing in a choir or have done voluntary work in another country. The list may also include any abilities you have that go outside your work but could help you look favourable to an employer. For example, if you teach rock climbing somewhere and are going for an education based role this will show that your passionate for teaching and learning already. One of my unique skills is to write and I mentioned in my last interview my passion for writing and research in careers education which impressed by former employer.

2.       Are you Bilingual? – Speaking another language can help when applying to certain roles. So, if you do speak another language especially Mandarin, Spanish, Hindi, Arabic etc. Then don’t be afraid to include this on your CV or application. Most of the languages I have mentioned apart from English are some of the most widely spoken languages in the world. When I worked in Islington knowing my native language Bengali sometimes helped me speak to parents. Employers love Bilingual job candidates especially if travel is a huge part of the work you do.

3.       Bring your personality along for ride – Your personality is key to you getting the job you want. Depending on the company and its culture make sure to research that properly before you apply to a company or go for an interview. It’s important to make sure their values and culture will suit you as a person. When you submit your application, CV, interview or give a presentation make sure you are being 100% authentic. Its ok to show the real you obviously maintain professionalism but don’t shy away from showing your true personality. By me showing my passion for careers education in my last interview it got me a job.

4.       Business experience/ side project – If you haven’t been in a job for a while or have been in between jobs. Showing you have had a small start-up or side project can say heaps to a potential employer. You haven’t just been waiting for the right job you have been proactive and learning and building your own skills. It also shows you are a self-starter and most employers love people who are motivated and can start working as soon as possible. Enthusiasm is key to any job role.

Think about these 4 points to help draw out your unique selling points. Be a memorable job candidate who won’t easily be forgotten.

Applying directly to unlikely oraganizations

 

This is a video I did in the summer. I wanted to share this with because its an area that gets overlooked sometimes when people are job hunting. 

1. Look at unlikely organisations like schools, colleges etc. Especially for administrative roles. Or roles that you want to pursue on a part time basis. This may be especially helpful for any mums who are looking to go back and want to go back to work but want flexible hours. 

2. Transferable skills - Certain roles could allow you to use the skills you have already and apply for roles with the experience you already have. In the video I mention case worker etc. I was a trained careers adviser but I have worked in non careers roles like an attendance adviser, academic adviser etc. This has been due to my experience of working with young people. You may have a background in business and finance and see a role available in a college or other organisation that is looking for someone who could be a business adviser or help with marketing etc. If you already have experience in this area you can use your transferable skills to apply to similar roles. The main way of accessing this is having a good look at the job description of the vacancy available and asking yourself two honest questions. 1. With the Essential Skills listed in the JD do I have these skills and how can explain this in a interview? 2. Can I really see myself doing the tasks required in this job and why is this so important to me? The reason why these questions are so important is because you need to make sure you portray both aspects on your application form in the personal statement section and in your interview. If this doesn't come across you may not the role. 

3. Application Forms - Do you need help with your application form especially the personal statement section as this is the most important section. CV tips Video

I have helped many women with their CVs and I get lots of questions on what is essential and what isn't essential etc. So I thought would put this video and post together for anyone who is currently job hunting. Or anyone who has been in the same job for a long time and now fancies changing. Please note these are suggestions that have worked for myself and the women I have helped. If you belong to a specialist sector you may have to include technical elements to your CV. Please make sure if you are unsure about this you speak to a current or past colleague who can support you with this.

Here are the tips I discuss in the video.

1. Personal Profile - Tells your potential employer the type of job you are looking for. It should be a concise outline of your experience and who you are as person. You may want to include what you value as an individual and how you wish to progress throughout your career. Be enthusiastic and show your passion for growth. 

2. Key Achievements - Is a really great section to that can help add value to your CV. You can talk about the fact that maybe you completed a marathon or you won an award at work. This is a great way to help share some of the great things you have achieved both on a personal and professional level. So that an potential employer can see what you truly have to offer.

3. Professional bodies - Make sure you mention if you belong to a professional board of membership.As this will show your professional development and on-gong interest within your field of work. 

4. Personal interests or hobbies and interest - Your CV is your opportunity to help you stand out from other potential employees. Don't forgot to show your true character and personality. This section will show you have interests outside work as well as being someone who enjoys what they do. Remember this is something that you can use as extra section its not something that is compulsory though.

Using your intuition to make decisions

Hi everyone this is a video I have done about intuition I wanted to share this with you all. Because I want you to think about if you use your intuition to make important life decisions. I always talk about intuition and think its something we can't ignore but have decided to listen to that inner voice more. I would definitely recommend you read "Thrive" by Arianna Huffington and also do your own research about intuition and what it means to you?

Whatever decisions you are making right now whether this be changing your job, moving to another country or buying a new house. Do you use intuition to help you? You may ask yourself what is intuition?  Intuition can be described as being "the ability to understand something instinctively, without the need for conscious reasoning." In order words your gut or inner voice telling you that something feels right or not. So do you use it enough and in your everyday life?

As I mention in the video Steve jobs used intuition to make many of his business decisions. Do you stomp on your own ambition?

Ambition its an ugly word right or is it? Depending on what you think about ambition and how you define it. The online dictonary defines ambition as being"an earnest desire for some type of achievement or distinction, as power, honor, fame, or wealth, and the willingness to strive for its attainment:" So how ambitious are you and do you think you stomp on your ambition. Many of the women I speak to have ambitions and dreams to achieve more. They want to serve others in a way which is unique and feel gratitude for the things they do. Sometimes though when a hard-working women is in a job they are extremely unhappy in their ambition goes out the window. Hearing comments like "You want to start your own company making jewellery , are you crazy get real.  That's never going to happen ever." This would put anyone off but if you constantly hear this it may help you stomp on your ambition.

Whatever your ambitions are don't allow others to hold you back. So how do you know you that you are stomping on your own ambition? These factors below should indicate that you may just be.

1. Other people's opinions hold you back from going after what you really want.

2. What you want is overwritten by what you should be doing. for example having a stable job, paying your mortgage etc.

3. The dream vision you had for your ideal future seems like a distant memory because its not realistic according to what society says.

4. You are fearful of the outcome of your actual ambitions and as a result play it safe. For example your dream could be to own a small boutique but you feel this will never happen and you will fail if you do try so stay in a job where you aren't interested or ambitious.

Ambition is so important in driving you to what you really want. So if you know your energy is ruining this do something about this sooner rather then later. As Bill Bradley says "Ambition is the path to success. Persistence is the vehicle you arrive in". Having ambition isn't easy its not meant to be but sticking to what you really want will pay off one day. So next time you think about giving up on your own ambitions don't. Instead of stomping on your ambitions why not ignite them and make them even stronger by working harder towards achieving and making them a reality.

Do you fear what others will think of you if you quit your job?

A women I spoke to once told me she didn't want to quit her job because she felt others would judge her. I asked her why this would be such a problem for her and she said that what others thought meant a lot to her. I then went on to ask her "Are you happy where you work". Her consistent answer was always "NO" So if this be the case why are you still there!! Do you let others dictate your future for you. This women certainly was and as a result was allowing her own happiness to be on the back burner. The people we surround ourselves with are very important. Robin Sharma says "Choose your influences well". If your friends and family don't support your decision to quit and persuade you to say in a job where you are unhappy ask yourself who is suffering more you or them.

I would advocate you take up some of the following tips:

1. Avoid listening to all such statement such as "If you don't work where will the money come from" or" Are you sure its kind of unrealistic to quit if you have't got a job lined up etc.

2. If people don't support you give them ultimatums or ignore them for a while.

3. Stand firm on your decisions about your career and life. Don't allow your family or friends to talk you into a life you don't want. If you know its not for you just quit sooner rather then later.

4. Type up your resignation letter. This may seem a scary but it makes it more real especially if you have been putting it off.

I would say whatever decision you make sure its yours and yours alone. I don't advocate quitting but if you know you can't take it anymore then do it. Remain postive about your future and dreams and go for what you want.

What does your work actually mean to you?

Everyone works for different reasons some people work for money, some because they love what they do but sometimes there  are some people who work because they feel they have to.

So is your job a means to end? I remember asking a old colleague of mine why they worked where they did. It was evident by their attitude they didn't like their job as they always complained "I am bored". So I asked them why do you work here then quite directly. At first they were shocked but they said "Because I have to do something". I then remember asking them what do you actually want to do and they said "No idea". How many people who go from job to job like they this individual feel this way? I am not judging anyone here but I feel its important if you want to work it should be doing something that you enjoy and not because you need to.

Question is how many of you work right now because society tells you have to not because you want to. Yes nobody through choice wants to be on job seekers allowance and am not trying to encourage that here. But what if you had the choice to work because you wanted to do not because you had to? Think about that for a second it may seem strange why I am talking about this as many of you may feel the same thing "We all have to work don't we?" Yes wouldn't be better if this was out of choice rather then necessity. In fact why can't it be both.

The meaning of work according to the online dictionary includes:

1.activity involving mental or physical effort done in order to achieve a result.

2. a task or tasks to be undertaken.

Do either of these definitions fit in to how you interpret work probably not. My point is that work by our individual minds can be interpreted in so many different ways. The person who works as banker cashier is no different to a business owner who runs a flower shop. What is different is the activity they engage and perhaps their attitude to their work. Lets take these examples the cashier may of landed this role right after leaving school and feels trapped in this role they feel they can't go anywhere else. Whilst the florist owner made the conscious decision to open up their own business and be their own boss. This example could also be the other way round but I am trying to say how many of us have made conscious decisions to be were we right now. Some of us may have, as have I but not everyone does. I am not saying this is a bad thing but many of us feel the expectations put on us so great its hard to achieve what we actually want.

Work is important to people in different ways. I hear may people saying if I don't work I can't pay the bills or mortgage. This is so important definitely but has the need for having to work been overridden by actually doing something you really love. It's never too late to change your job or career. I have seen so many people do this successfully and helped people with their individual transitions. Yet sometimes society and the people we surround ourselves with stop this from happening.

Redundancy is a key factor in changing people's attitude to work. I remember when I was at risk of redundancy I felt vulnerable and wasn't sure about what I would do, if I lost my job it was a constant worry for me. Many people feel like who they are as individuals is put into question. Their work means so much to them it may feel like a part of them is being chipped away. Having been through this myself its not nice seeing your work colleagues angry, frustrated and upset. Your work is important but there are so many things which are even more important when it comes down to it. Like your family and health etc.  The work you do is only one element of your life it shouldn't define who you are.

So what does your work really mean to you? This is something only you can answer. For me my work is my mission to help professional women seek happiness in your careers and find something they really want. This makes me happy.
